In Loving Memory of Sgt. Nate Howard

With heavy hearts and profound respect, the nation mourns the loss of National Guard Sgt. Nate Howard, a devoted soldier who gave his life in service to his country at just 29 years old. Sgt. Howard was one of two U.S. service members killed during a Saturday attack on American forces in Syria, a tragedy that has reverberated through his family, his unit, and communities across the country.

According to reports, U.S. troops were conducting a joint field patrol on December 13 alongside Syrian security forces near the city of Palmyra when they came under fire. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and President Donald Trump later attributed the attack to a gunman tied to ISIS. In the face of danger, Sgt. Howard and his fellow soldiers stood firm in their duty, embodying courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to the mission.

Those who knew Nate describe a man who was a soldier through and through—by calling, by character, and by heart. His stepfather, Jeff Bunn, shared that Nate dreamed of being a soldier from a very young age and carried that purpose with him into adulthood. “Nate was a dedicated soldier through and through,” Bunn said. “He wanted to be a soldier from a very young boy to his adulthood.”

Beyond the uniform, Nate was deeply loved as a husband, son, man of faith, and friend. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Arianna, whose life he enriched with steadfast love and partnership. He was known for his strong faith, compassion, and integrity—values that guided his actions both on and off the battlefield. His family takes comfort in the belief that he is now at peace, embraced by his faith and the God he served.

Among his fellow soldiers, Sgt. Howard earned a reputation for bravery and selflessness. He was described as someone with no fear, a leader who would be first in and last out, committed to the principle of leaving no one behind. He and the other fallen soldiers, along with the interpreter who was also killed, are remembered as heroes—individuals who stood together in the service of something greater than themselves.

Sgt. Nate Howard’s life was defined by purpose, service, and love. While his years were far too few, the impact he made was immense. His sacrifice will not be forgotten, and his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved him, served beside him, and benefited from his courage.

As the nation honors his memory, we extend our deepest condolences to Arianna, to his family, to his fellow soldiers, and to all who grieve this profound loss. May they find strength in remembrance, comfort in community, and peace in knowing that Sgt. Howard’s service and sacrifice will endure.

May Sgt. Nate Howard rest in peace.

His courage is honored. His faith remembered. His legacy everlasting.
