In Loving Memory of Emeritus Dave Ward

Houston is mourning the loss of a true broadcasting legend. ABC13 Anchor Emeritus Dave Ward has passed away, leaving behind a legacy that shaped local journalism and touched generations of viewers. For more than 50 years, Dave Ward was not just a news anchor—he was a trusted voice, a familiar face, and a constant presence in Houston homes.

Each evening, Dave welcomed viewers with his signature greeting, “Good evening, friends.” Those words were more than a catchphrase; they reflected how deeply he valued the relationship he shared with the people of Houston. To Dave, viewers were not just an audience—they were neighbors, companions, and friends in the city he loved so dearly.

Born David Henry Ward in 1939 in Dallas, Dave spent much of his youth in Huntsville, Texas, where his passion for broadcasting first took root. While attending college, he began his career in radio at KGKB Radio in Tyler, quickly demonstrating a natural talent for storytelling and communication. Just a few years later, he joined WACO Radio, where his dedication and leadership skills propelled him to Program Director in a remarkably short time.

In 1962, Dave moved to Houston, a city that would become his lifelong home and the center of his professional legacy. He worked at KNUZ Radio as a News Reporter and later as News Director, sharpening the skills that would soon make him a household name. In 1966, he joined Channel 13, initially serving as the station’s only on-the-street news reporter and photographer—doing the hard, hands-on work that defined early television journalism.

By early 1967, Dave transitioned into the anchor chair, hosting Channel 13’s weekday 7 a.m. newscast. Later that same year, he became the first host of the beloved “Dialing for Dollars” program, which eventually evolved into “Good Morning Houston.” His warmth, professionalism, and natural connection with viewers made him instantly beloved. Houston embraced him, and he embraced Houston right back.

In January 1968, Dave Ward became the anchor of Eyewitness News at 6 and 10 p.m., a role he would hold for decades. Night after night, he guided viewers through moments of joy, crisis, heartbreak, and hope. From historic events to everyday stories, Dave delivered the news with integrity, calm, and compassion—earning the trust of an entire city.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dave Ward will be remembered for his humility, kindness, and unwavering love for Houston. He believed deeply in the power of local news and the responsibility that came with telling the community’s stories. His influence shaped countless journalists who followed in his footsteps, setting a standard of excellence that endures to this day.

Though Dave Ward is no longer with us, his voice, his values, and his legacy live on. He will forever be remembered as Houston’s anchorman, a man who didn’t just report the news, but became part of the fabric of the city itself.

Rest in peace, Dave.

Thank you for the decades of trust, dedication, and friendship.

Good evening, friend—your legacy will never fade.
