Hailey Westcot, 21, Killed in Tragic Wrong-Way Crash on Interstate 89 in Richmond

RICHMOND, Vt. — A devastating multi-vehicle crash involving a wrong-way driver on Interstate 89 has claimed the life of Hailey Westcot, a 21-year-old woman from Northfield, leaving family, friends, and communities across Vermont mourning a life lost far too soon.

According to police, the crash occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m. on I-89 southbound in Richmond, resulting in the closure of both southbound lanes between Richmond and Bolton for several hours as emergency crews responded and investigators worked the scene.

Authorities say Timothy Wooster, 45, of Jericho, was traveling northbound when he crossed the median into the southbound lanes. His vehicle then collided head-on with the car driven by Hailey Westcot. The violent impact caused catastrophic damage.

Following the initial collision, a third vehicle traveling southbound also struck Westcot’s car, triggering a rollover and compounding the severity of the crash. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Hailey Westcot was pronounced deceased as a result of her injuries.

The incident involved multiple vehicles, including a tractor-trailer, and brought traffic to a standstill during the busy evening commute. Police have not released additional details about injuries to other drivers involved, and the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

Hailey’s death has sent shockwaves through Northfield and beyond. At just 21 years old, she had her whole life ahead of her—dreams, plans, and possibilities that were tragically cut short. Those who knew her describe a young woman full of promise, kindness, and warmth, someone whose presence made a difference in the lives around her.

Vermont State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the wrong-way driving that led to the crash. Officials are urging drivers to remain alert, report suspected wrong-way vehicles immediately, and prioritize safety on the roads.

As the community grieves, tributes and messages of support continue to pour in for Hailey Westcot’s family and loved ones. Her loss is a painful reminder of how quickly lives can change and how important roadway safety remains.

Further information will be released as the investigation continues.
